Test Cabinets

Phase Design, in cooperation with our automation division has been able to minimize or eliminate the majority of the issues that negatively impact on-line acoustic testing. This has been achieved through exhaustive research and by intelligent design including the cabinet shape, construction methodology and isolation techniques.

Cabinet construction is based on a steel tube space frame, heavily triangulated and braced. External barriers such as the floor and walls are all constructed from square tubing; interior braces from round tubing to minimize reflections. Dual layer MDF is bonded in a specialized process to the tubing to eliminate air leaks as well

as add acoustic shielding. Main baffle is made of 6061 aluminum, 22mm thick and inlaid with a hardened steel insert baffle retainer ring.

The insert baffle is also made from 6061 aluminum, 22mm finished thickness. The insert baffle is designed to simplify driver fixture installation while also providing adequate room for testing of systems such as bookshelf or center channel speakers. The insert baffle will accommodate drivers up to 300mm diameter and systems up to 325mm X 650mm. Custom sizes are available on request.

Microphone position is critical to repeatability and measurement correlation from one test to another. Typical test cabinets are either outfitted with consumer mic stands that simply do not have the stability necessary to remain stationary or worse- a “home made” mic stand. Our research proves what many of you already know; mic position is absolutely critical. Given that, we designed in a super robust mic stand and adjustment system that always remains directly on center and perpendicular to the plane of the baffle. Not only is the mic stand well mounted, it is manufactured from heavy duty components to minimize resonance issues. Even the shape of the stand, the extension post and clamping system were designed to minimize reflections and resonance. The extension post is adjustable to within 50mm of the baffle plane and can be retracted to a distance of 400mm from the baffle plane. Extension posts are made from 18mm steel shafting; slotted at one end and have a protected 1/4-20 UNC thread post at the opposite end.

The primary function of the TC-2 is to deliver reliable, repeatable results. This goes well beyond the individual cabinet; we build and fine tune each cabinet to have an acoustic response characteristic that is as identical as possible to other cabinets. This is exceedingly helpful for our customers with multiple cabinets in vendors throughout the world as they can now directly correlate measurement data from one facility to another with the confidence that the overall level and the acoustic response characteristic and curve shape are comparable within 1dB or less. Each TC-2 is fully constructed, finished and performance tested in-house at Phase Group headquarters in Shenzhen. Phase guarantees each TC-2 to deliver better than 0.5dB max deviation on the standardized gauge R&R test. To put this in perspective, the typical performance of end of line test cabinets commonly found in speaker manufacturing facilities throughout the world, the R&R study will reveal 3dB to 5dB of deviation on the dynamic testing procedure.

Installation Note: The TC-2 in standard configuration is not intended for use in buildings with wooden floors unless properly supported. The TC-2 weighs approximately 800Kg (1,760 pounds).
